Is Tesla playing a dangerous game with China by allowing Taiwan orders
It shouldn't be too surprising that Taiwan will be getting Tesla $TSLA Model Y deliveries, considering they already get Model 3 orders from Fremont USA.
According to TroyTeslike on Twitter, this is also the same for South Korea, considering duties on imports are cost prohibitive.
Personally I think it's great that Taiwan people can enjoy the benefits of owning a Tesla, especially one that doesn't come from China. However, it's a secret to no one that China takes a hard lined approach to businesses that present any sort of danger to their global political interests. And Taiwan is definitely one of these interests.
China represents Tesla's second largest market, so its fair to say that Tesla best tread carefully here. If the CCP wakes up one day and decides that it has extracted enough IP from Tesla, and local EV manufacturers can easily make up for the loss of Tesla locally, then watch how quickly the Tesla gigafactory is shut down.
